- ΓÇ£Satchel" Paige pitched in
- the Negro leagues and
- later in the major leagues.
- It is said he won more than
- 2,000 games in Negro-league competition.

- Satchel got his nickname when he worked
- carrying bags, or satchels, at a bus depot. He
- began his pro career with the Chattanooga
- Black Lookouts of the Negro Southern
- League in 1926. (Blacks were not allowed to
- play in the major or minor leagues at this
- time.) He pitched for several teams, but he is
- best known for the time he spent with the
- Kansas City Monarchs.
